On Mission with God: Being Sent Ones

On Mission with God: Being Sent Ones

On Mission with God: Being Sent Ones (Luke10:1 and Acts 2-3)
• Again, and again Jesus gives the command to go!
o Matt 28:18-20
o Many of Jesus’ parables give us insight into what the mission will look like.
Luke 10:1 Jesus is commissioning and sending out the 72, expanding His mission team from 12 to 72.
• Everything He says to them, can be a word for us in our day.
• First, they counted the cost
o The heard and saw the cost and were willing to pay the price for the sake of the mission.
• Second, they have not been with Jesus all that long
o The 72 people leave and follow Jesus after what could not have been more than a few days.
• Third, they are brand new disciples being asked to go on mission
o There is very little training here. Which is good news for all of us.
Verse 2 The word harvest implies something that is ready.
• This is a statement about God’s sovereignty, God is always at work drawing people to Himself.
o This also takes the pressure off of us.
• Then Jesus adds that the harvest is plentiful.
o The harvest is plentiful so there are people who don’t know Jesus around us somewhere.
• Jesus goes on to state that the problem is not with the harvest or its plenty but the lack of labor.
o Well of course the labor is us. He is looking for a labor source on Mission
• Jesus then tells the crowd to pray, and the prayer is simple. Ask the Lord of the harvest to send….
o This is a great prayer for all of us to pray.
Verse 3 Jesus immediately answers the prayer and sends them. They are the answer to their own prayer.
• It goes without saying that this command to go make disciples still applies to us today.
• But Jesus also says that we will be going out like lambs among wolves. This won’t be easy.
Verse 4 His command to not take a purse or bag is a statement about faith.
• We are to trust in His provision and care.
• His command to not greet anyone on the road is not a command to be grumpy.
o It’s a warning to not get distracted. This is about urgency.
Acts 2:46 From this one passage, much of the modern church has developed the whole of their church philosophy.
• But historically we know that the disciples and Apostles in fact became stuck in Jerusalem.
• This is just one small passage in the book of Acts.
o Yet the entire rest of the book is about going
• Look at how Acts continues into chap 3, this is a perfect example of being on mission in everyday life.
